US Stocks end up lower as Market opens first day of 2021, Dow Jones drops – Invest Consulting Group Limited

Major indices are all red in the first session of 2021 as concern with the new covid19 variant has spread fear to most investors. The selloff continues as the confirmed coronavirus cases grew globally setting the economic recovery aside.

The three major indices loss more than 1%. S&P 500 fell about 1.48% while Nasdaq dropped around 1.47%. The Dow declined marking its worst opening since 2016 with 1.25% loss.

Stocks

  • S&P 500 is down around 55.42 points or is 1.48% lower to 3,700.65.
  • The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell around 382.59 or is down by 1.25% to 30,223.89.
  • Nasdaq Composite dropped around 189.83 points or 1.47% to 12,698.45.
  • The Stoxx Europe 600 Index rose about 0.7%.
  • The MSCI Asia Pacific Index jumps a bit around 0.6%.

US Treasuries are also widely affected by the post-holiday spike of coronavirus cases. Most investors turned into safe assets amid a broad selloff in stock market.

Bonds

  • The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note declined about 1 basis point to 0.90%.
  • The yield on the 30-year Treasury bond is also down quite a bit at 1.64%.
  • Germany’s 10-year yield dropped about four basis points to -0.60%.
  • Britain’s 10-year yield depreciated around two basis points to 0.173%.

Gold and crude has ended mixed in today’s market as the latter fell almost 2% while Gold recovered some of its losses late month of 2020. 

Commodities

  • Gold rose bigtime about 50.62 points or is up by 2.60% to $1,944.28 an ounce.
  • Silver also surged less than 1 point or 3.52 points to $27.26 an ounce.
  • West Texas Intermediate crude is down less than a point or 1.85% to $47.62 per barrel.
  • Brent crude is also down a bit at $50.74 a barrel.

Currencies rallied mixed with DXY depreciating less $90.00 per share.

Currencies

  • US Dollar Currency Index dropped around 0.07% to 89.869 per dollar.
  • The Japanese yen has no little change to 103.15 per dollar.
  • The euro appreciates about 0.3% to $1.2248.
